My number one piece of advice is: Study your Craft.
Read lots of books in the genre's your interested in, but more than that study non-fiction books about writing. Writer's Digest is a great place to find books and articles on writing.
Just because you don't need a college education to be a writer, does not mean you should be any less educated. I have a whole shelf of books that I used to help me be a better writer and develop my skills.

When I get writer's block, if I read someone else's book or read about writing new scenes almost always pop into my head. I have to keep a notepad when I read just to record the random thoughts.
