Go for it. Your first draft is perfect. Then get to work revising. By all means, find a critique group, people who will give you honest, sometimes tough, feedback. Do it online if you can't find such a group in your community.

When I joined the board of Prevent Blindness Nebraska, I learned that the parent organization, National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, was founded in 1908 to get legislation enacted to prevent a blinding scourge known as "babies' sore eyes.'" My imagination ran away with it.
