Jeffrey Frank It's hard for me to answer this because I write fiction and non-fiction. But I can say that writing narrative non-fiction is the easy part--the hard part is researching and fact-checking the material, which ends up leaving me with a great historical puzzle. The writing is trying to solve the puzzle--or puzzles.
There are many great things about writing fiction--the chance to try to understand things, and the chance to use language to express ideas and emotions. That's also the worst thing about being a writer--it's so easy to screw it up!
Jeffrey Frank I've probably had the idea for IKE AND DICK for at least twenty years. Blame that on growing up in Washington, and or on the fact that I've always found Eisenhower and Nixon were fascinating, each in his own way. And then they were tied together in politics and in their personal lives.
Jeffrey Frank I'm working on another novel (one that I have serious doubts about), and I've begun another major non-fiction project for Simon & Schuster.
Jeffrey Frank Well, you just keep staring at the page (or the screen), and eventually it gives in, Usually.
