'A Dance to the Music of Time'. I have read the first volume and loved it as much as the excellent TV drama. However, it has been on my 'To Read' list for a couple of years now. I have so many books to read as research for my own novels and a stack of recent publications by other authors in my circle, I rarely have time to revisit the classics.

My short (and very routine) connection with the Secret Intelligence Service.

I don't get writer's block as such, but I do have periods where I struggle to know what to write next. I have two tactics to overcome this. Firstly, I will move onto a different section of the story that is easier to write or for which I have completed the research. Before I go back to the difficult chapters, I often go for a long walk and usually come back with three chapters mapped out. Another tactic is just to write. It might be rubbish and gets overwritten, but the process gets the creative juices flowing.

Seeing the positive feedback from complete strangers. It boosts one's egos to see the pleasure one can give other people. Moreover, I get a kick out creating characters. But for me, they would not live and there is something very satisfying at seeing words on a page in an order that nobody else in the world has or could write.

Give it a go. If you don't take the risk, you will never know how you might have fared. Even if your book is not published, you will be only one of a thousand who actually completes a book. How often do you hear that, 'I could write a book if only ...'? However, once you have finished your work, take advice from experts before approaching agents or publishers.

I am writing a tale based on real history about the RN's submarine operations in the Baltic in support of the Russians. It is a tale set against the backdrop of the Russian revolutions and includes submarine warfare, espionage and murder.

i was bored. The recession hit our business and I was frustrated that I could do nothing about it. To fill my time whilst we weathered out the storm, I started writing. My initial attempt was bad, but I was put on the right lines by some literary consultants. I then committed to a series that highlighted the lesser known activities of the Royal Navy in WW1.

I served in naval intelligence and wanted to inform readers that the Royal Navy was instrumental in founding today's Secret Service. I cam by the ideas for the plot by reading accounts of German espionage activity in Britain (including a plan to blow up the Bank of England - the inspiration for the James Bond novel, Goldfinger) and how the Germans plotted to foment a jihad against the British Empire in the near East.
