Tracey Warr My great grandfather was a coachman at a grand mansion owned by the makers of Huntley and Palmers Biscuits and my great grandmother was a maid in the house. My great grandfather abandoned his post and wife who was evicted from their cottage and had to go into the workhouse with her ten children, including my grandmother. My grandmother wanted to know who her father was, why he abandoned them and what happened to him. I think he may have been a gambler and a draft dodger but I would need to do more research.
Tracey Warr Donna Leon’s police investigator, Guido Brunetti and his wife, Paola, who is a University English Literature professor specialising in the study of Henry James's novels. I love Leon’s creation of the spaces and sites of Venice and of Brunetti and Paola’s home life, which are woven into her crime plots. Paola never plays a direct role in the unravelling of the mysteries Guido solves, although her aristocratic connections sometimes come in handy. Leon portrays the humorous, intellectual and emotional relationship between the couple which is a constant support to Guido in his work, stopping him from despairing about the often evil people he has to confront, and the tragedies he has to witness. I’m quite happy to be a gooseberry with this gourmandising, reading, wine sipping couple in novel after novel. They make me feel at home too.
Tracey Warr My future fiction novella Meanda came out of a residency at Maisons Daura in the Lot Valley in France. The Lot is the most meandering river in France.
Tracey Warr A twitter version of my future fiction novella Meanda about a watery exoplanet starts today on @Meanda55555
