I’m involved in a writers group PDX Writers and I’ve been lucky to meet some really wonderfully supportive people on my journey. Interacting with them and also facilitating my own Wednesday Workshop really helps. Then of course there’s certain characters that seem to appear in my work that sort of lead my along. Sometimes to the point where they disagree and point me in a more interesting direction. I’m a very character driven writer. Plots are hard for me.

With Stumptown, I’d been doing a column for Street Roots- Portland’s version of The Big Issue, a paper where most of the proceeds go to the homeless vendors. It got me thinking about all the people who we’ve deemed 2nd class citizens. How mental illness, poverty, unemployment or homelessness are now dismissed as being a fault -a moral or spiritual failing. And how they’re also secondary characters in most literature as well. And I wanted to see what it would be like to write a book about people who survive moment to moment - day to day.

Write, simple as that. When you feel like you've got your teeth into something really great--keep at it.
If at all possible find yourself a POSITIVE group of writers, a workshop or community. I've met so many people who have had such an impact on my work, sharing their time and feedback. If the group doesn't make you feel good after the first few meets--move on.

I love that you can do it anytime, anywhere. You can wake up at 3:00 AM and go scribble down an idea. You can even do it in your pajama's.
