Mick Brady Sometimes it's just a matter of going somewhere. I think it's important to have a set writing routine, but if I'm feeling mentally sluggish, getting out of my usual surroundings can shake something loose. Sometimes going nowhere helps even more. Clearing my mind through 15 minutes of meditation can allow bright new possibilities to float up from the unconscious.
Mick Brady Along with developing your craft, spend some time and energy to learn the business side of being an author. Set aside 30 minutes a week absorbing what it takes to launch and market a book. Assemble your tools, build your networks. Writing something good or even great isn't enough, unless you're content with being your only reader.
Mick Brady Living in a world of constant discovery. Being surprised by what my characters do, or the places and predicaments they land in. Learning new things about science and nature through background research. Better understanding other people and myself through flashes of insight. Giving life to dreams and magic.
Mick Brady I deny it. If you refuse to allow it to be real, it can have no power. I can always write -- it's simply a matter of putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. What results may sometimes be garbage, but that's OK. It takes me closer to what I want to say by allowing me to reject what I don't want to say. The challenge for me is not a blank page -- it's the pages that need to be torn apart and reassembled. Writing is revising.
