In the middle of the night, at age eight, my mother, Ellen, saw clearly at the foot of her bed the ghost of her mother, arms outstretched as if wanting to take back her child. In sheer terror she jumped out of her bed, tore right through the apparition, and, with no time to run down the staircase she leapt panicked and unawares that just a short distance from the bottom, a door, the large glass pane inset in the old wooden frame with fading green paint quietly waiting.

During one of my visits to a remote village in north-central Borneo, the local shaman turned me on to a ritual that dispensed with all blockage. The first part of the ritual consisted of drinking a special tea, made from dried goat's excrement, crushed snails, and a smattering of other ingredients which need not be identified here. After drinking a half coconut shell full of this concoction, I was then shown a dance, performed "since the beginning", according to my shaman friend, that would complete the cleansing. The dance was to be performed buck naked and in full view of the villagers -- a kind of public reckoning -- and, in combination with the hallucinatory effects of the tea, worked wonders to clear my blockages.
Later, I ran into some difficulty when I performed this same ritual in downtown Topeka. I can tell you that jails in this city are clean and well run.
