S. Lynn Scott Usually it is a question that starts my creative ball rolling. For instance, what would Shakespeare think of modern life if he were to materialise in the 21st century? Or, if a family has turned to crime would a substantial windfall prove to be redemptive, or not? Add to that inspiration from newspaper stories (the outrage over the discovery that a local S & M group were using the village hall for regular activities that included tea and cakes) or just the people you see on the bus or train. You don't have to look far to find a humorous situation, or a tragic one that you can use as the foundation for something bigger.
S. Lynn Scott I was simply wondering one day what Shakespeare would think if he were transported to modern day England with all its quirks and oddities. I added Elizabeth I as she was an interesting character and a nice contrast to the lovable William, and then I needed the catalyst which was modern-day, ordinary woman Ally. Having created the central characters the adventures pretty much wrote themselves so I just had to work out the elements of plot and mystery. (All that sounds so easy - it wasn't.)
S. Lynn Scott A book about revenge which is nearly complete and another about community. Both humorous with elements of mystery...
S. Lynn Scott If you love it, write. Open your mind to criticism because you will learn from it. Be aware that you have to be very good, very hard-working and very lucky to make a living from it!
S. Lynn Scott Getting to know my characters. Usually I enjoy spending time with them.
S. Lynn Scott Write something. Anything. I quite often have to write press releases to a deadline so that is a good start as I am not given any choice but to write something. If I force myself past the block by writing any old rubbish then I quite often find that I can move on through the story and then come back and fix the rubbish. Usually works for me!
