Kari Rust Usually something I see or witness will strike me as mysterious, or funny or remarkable - and a story might be sparked. Because I am a visual artist first, it is often an image of some kind that starts the process. I also get inspired by all the excellent books that are out there when I visit the local children's book store.
Kari Rust I draw more than I write, but a walk or a run outside seems to activate my thinking process. I try to pay attention and observe whatever is going on around me - you can find the seeds of ideas scattered anywhere.
Kari Rust The idea for Tricky came from an old photo of a man and dog I found at a sort of antique shop in my neighborhood. I think inspiration also came a little bit from Matilda, which I was reading to my kids around that time, as well as classic characters like the Grinch and Scrooge. Those guys always had a big impact on me! One more inspiration would have been the dogs my family had. There were some that really did play tricks on us. I like dogs a lot.
