David Hicks Hi there, Tameca! Obviously I'm not receiving notifications when people ask me questions; hence the loooong delay in my response. So YES, I'm currently finishing a big, sprawling, messy novel about the end of America as told by a waiter in Yonkers. I'm excited about it. Thanks for asking! :-)
David Hicks I don't even know what that is. :-) Every time I get a chance to write, I write, and I always have something to work on. Sometimes if I'm "blocked" it's only because there's something hard coming up and I'm reluctant to get in there and work on it. So it's just a matter of staying at my desk and eventually it all comes out, messy but true.
David Hicks I'm currently finishing a big, sprawling, messy novel about a charming, optimistic, but somewhat clueless waiter in New York whose life unravels just as America unravels in the new millennium.
David Hicks I've published a slew of autobiographical stories in the last ten years, and when I was organizing them into a collection, I realized that if I put them in chronological order (according to the main character's age, I mean), the collection had the arc of a novel: the main character screws up his life in NYC, loses his children, gets lost in the mountains of Colorado, and reunites with his children in the end. There were gaps in the narrative, however, so I took a year to fill some of those gaps with new chapters from different characters' points of view. (I even asked my children to write short chapters from their points of view.) The result: a "novel-in-stories" that I'm very proud of.
