Who in the heck is the ghost that keeps following me? I swear, I'm not crazy. I've heard footsteps, seen books fly across the room, and things disappear all the time. And I can put my car keys and glasses down and they disappear. Oh, wait, that's no mystery. That's middle age.

Aspiring to something means you strive to accomplish it.
You either are a writer, or you aren't.
If you write, you are a writer.
Aspire to finish your project and aspire to network with readers and fellow writers. Aspire to stay strong in the face of rejections, and humble in the face of accolades.
But most of all, aspire to never stop writing what you know.

Writing is an obsession, a passion. It's not a hobby. I've seen people write with pen and paper because they didn't have a laptop available, or were waiting for it to be repaired. Come up with a plot, then start writing it. Try and set a goal to finish in a year or less. Then read a book on a different subject. When done, go back and read your manuscript and start editing it. This way it'll be a fresh look after having read something else. You need distance to see your mistakes.
I believe James Cameron or Stephen King coined the phrase, "If you want to be a writer you have to read a lot, and write a lot."

The best thing about being a writer is that I can write my characters' world the way I want it to be. Writing is like cooking for me. I gather my ingredients, which is everything I know and feel about the real world, then throw in only what I want to add to the mix.

I'm currently working on a novel set around Abby, Roshan and Jenny's daughter in The Unexpected Daughter. Set in rural Georgia, it is a coming-of-age novel about discovering cultural identity and human integrity within the polarized climate of current American society. Abby had always loved being unique until her parents moved her from Atlanta to a small town in South Georgia where "unique" just means "different," and when a terrorist strikes on the news, "different" can be dangerous.

Sounds like a good subject.

I'm currently working on a WWII Manuscript I completed years ago. In fact, I wrote it on a word processor before laptops were available (it's that old). But I am happy to say my writing was much better because throughout my life since I started writing I completed 11 manuscripts (but can only find 8 of them). The subject is still good because WWII stories are always popular. I write a page a day so that in a year I can have a book done. Works for me. ...more

Writer's block is that seductive voice inside me, whispering, " This blank page is not worthy of you. Go to Target. You need shampoo. And while you're at it, go for a run outside. And then clean the bathroom, And then email your editor and text every friend you have in your contacts, just to say hi."
So, I put my phone and car keys in another room, disable wifi on my laptop, schedule my cleaning lady to clean the bathroom, and give myself a set time to write before I can get up from my desk. Every time I put myself in this "writing time-out," I end up in the zone and get a lot accomplished!
