I've spent 30+ years in the wine and spirits business as an employee and as a consultant. It's a crazy business that few people know much about. Over the years when I told people about the nature of the business (not what you think) and the people in it, I've found that most are totally engaged and fascinated.
So six years ago I started a blog about the industry and then the book followed.

I'm a story teller and I love people. So I suppose people are my inspiration. Someone once told me that it's a good writing exercise to sit in an airport waiting lounge, watch the people and see if you can imagine their stories. Who are they, where are they going, what's their life like, and so on.

In addition to Inside the Bottle, a nonfiction book, I've written plays and screen plays. Currently, I'm working on a novel. it's difficult to do but the story i have is worth telling. I'm also rewriting one of my stage plays.

Write, write, and write some more. The more you write the more your work will be enjoyable and the better you will get at it.
Also, join a writer's group and get some feedback. It helps a great deal. But, make sure you learn separate the feedback you get into "worthwhile," "I'll think about it" and "that's not helpful."

There are many... Wrestling with the creative process has to be at the top of the list. How will I tell the story? Will the chapter be interesting to readers? have I organized my thoughts well? I enjoy the challenge and solving it.
I suppose another good thing is the reaction of readers. Call it ego, call it learning the reactions to your efforts, or just plain curiosity -- I enjoy knowing what people think about my work. Good or bad.

I stop writing. I play a video game. I write an email. I take a walk. Make a phone call. In short, I don't press, I turn to something else and I know sooner or later that the block will pass.
