I try to work on more than one story at a time. I find that working two distinctly different plots at once helps to keep my momentum going. I have a tendency to want to work on anything but what's in front of me, so bouncing back and forth between projects gives me the drive to keep going on both.

I'm often inspired by reading about scientific concepts that are new to me. A question pops into my head and I turn to Wikipedia for a quick answer. That quick answer turns into months of reading anything I can get my hands on until I feel like I've looked at the subject from every angle. Then a plot and characters emerge.

I first had an idea that eventually became the moment when everything goes wrong for the protagonist. It was the moment when Deven and Chuck wake up deep inside the labyrinth of Wall City with their implants gone wrong. The idea was sickly compelling, and the question, "now what?" wouldn't leave me alone. Everything else in the story was born from that moment.
