I have a habit of humanising inanimate objects and am often teased about it by my family. Sometimes things have a habit of simply disappearing and then make a quiet reappearance as if they had never left. Where do these things go and why do they sometimes just not want to be found? That is a mystery I often ponder in my own life.

One of my old friends who is a start-up guru would write a mantra a day on his Facebook page. They included some really great wisdom for those who set up their own business. That was the inspiration for writing a book although the direction it ultimately took was led by events and further inspiration I gathered along the way.

It depends on whether you are writing fiction or non-fiction. For the latter, research the subject you want to write about, understand it well and then write it simply and from the heart. The more complex the subject matter, the more important it is to write it in a way that even non-experts will understand. Ultimately, your writing should be an extension of who you are and how you think. Stay true to yourself.

I go away, do something else that takes my mind off the thing I want to write about and that often works. Listening to my favourite music or a glass of red wine can help too.
