Easy. Middle-earth and I would seek the help of some elves rather swiftly if I was out of The Shire.

Hi Marilyn,
Wonderful to hear from you - and thank you for the review, you are most kind. I was very touched by it.
I am honoured too to be on your radar now. I am currently writing a fantasy book (I know, it is quite a shift from historical fiction), though there is a sequel to The Silent Land planned in which the story is based upon the sons, James and Sebastian. Should it make it, I shall most certainly let you know of progress.
Best wishes, and happy reading,
David

Mmm... a question that requires a little bit of vulnerability and I daresay some contemplation. I may require some time...

So many choices, thank you for asking. I'll go with the first that came into my head. Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. The couple that never really was.
I've chosen them because of the author's skill in having the reader consider what could have been as well as their past.

For The Silent Land, the original book was called The Catesby Committee and was set in 1939 England around the relationship between two young men, James and Sebastian, and how one became compromised in his patriotism. I began to write the novel, but after a chapter or two I suddenly became more interested in their mother and what her story was so I took the story back many years to when she was a young woman.
The chronology of her life couldn’t ignore the First World War, hence my involvement of a relatively unknown battle in the narrative; a battle I had once researched as a reporter.
The story ends in 1919, leaving James and Sebastian awaiting their turn (in my head) for their tale to be told.

The end of the day when you've written a section that you are reasonably happy with and you begin to consider what the following day will bring.

By reading what I have written and deciding whether I need to start again, or whether it is okay and just a few tweaks are needed. I find sitting at my desk to be the best inspiration.

A novel called The Legend of Caradoc. It is about a Cornish boy called Jack and he is the 16-year-old that every male teen would like to have as their friend. If you fancy a taste of the story, the first draft of the opening chapter is on my website: daviddunham.co.uk - go to the extracts part and scroll down. And please don't hesitate to give me your thoughts.

Find people who don't know you to read your work and request that they be as critical as they want. Also, don't settle on a sentence that you know isn't as you want it to be. And finally, remind yourself from time to time why you are writing your novel.

I put on a pair of shoes and leave the house. When I have the next sentence in my head I head home, unless I think there is a second sentence wanting to escape.
