I'm pretty bad at it, but really, the only way I've found is to read other books in your genre and other author's advice on framing a story. It will get your mind stretching the boundaries of what you once thought was a certain kind of story and ends up being another.

Is that a trick question? Some days I'm decidedly UNinspired, but mostly it's when I read other authors' work. It hits me as I'm reading and then I get too distracted to finish the book because I'm too busy trying to write my own.

It was something that developed over many years in my head, but really came to fruition when I started thinking about putting characters in the world I had created. I didn't want to write about characters who were righteous and morally superior--I get sick of those guys really fast. As soon as I had my main trio in my head, I was up and running.
