One of my cousin's was diagnosed with a disease (not life-threatening) the doctor said was common in Scandinavian ancestry. My aunt who has researched and kept many records of our ancestry shows no such connections. Was it the Vikings who routinely raided Europe and the English isles or is there a family somewhere we know nothing about?

With fiction, it's creating the story and the characters and literally bringing them into existence. With non-fiction, it's striking a balance to provide information in an entertaining way. The exception to that is, Your Room at the End: Thoughts About Aging We'd Rather Avoid. That is an incredibly important book, but due to the emotionally intense nature of the subject, it isn't entertaining.

I pay attention to stories that I hear, to what people talk about that they enjoy reading. In the case of Shades of Murder, my first scuba-themed mystery, there was an incident reported on a scuba forum about an accidental death. The circumstances were rather odd and I gave it a sinister twist to develop the primary plot line.
