I read a lot. I try to pay attention to my surroundings. I make notes about what seems important enough to spark an idea for a story. I don't always follow through, but I have nice piles of notes to fall back on during the dry spells.

I view writing as a process of piecing words and sentences together in a coherent manner that conveys the meaning I want to achieve. I liken it to making a good piece of jewelry: attractive, functional, and fun to wear.
Writing is work and the fun part doesn't always show up right away. But when everything clicks and I feel I've done my best that satisfied feeling is there.
Add to that the importance of dealing with major themes, such as preservation, and I get the feeling I might have made a contribution.

Most of my inspiration still centers on my 24 years as a resident of Bishop Hill. It's never been your average small town.

I got a good start on my second book during last year's NaNoWriMo. It'll be a mystery that returns to Bishop Hill and focuses on the obsolete currency the Colonists acquired in 1857. Still have lots to do.
