Tony Halker Glancing at myself in the mirror unexpectedly I smile approvingly. Looking more closely I notice I have a grey hair that when pulled proves to be my own.
Tony Halker I would like to go to a fictional time before history, before writing. I want to know the people from those times and understand their psychology and beliefs. We know humans have evolved and adapted, how they have changed physically, but how has our psychology altered. I would like to try and understand the outlook and values of people who live on and off the land, to sense how their deities evolved, how their technologies were developed and maintained; to know whether they were mutually dependent and supportive, or killing in a fight for resources. An oral society must be very different from our!
Tony Halker "Swimming Home" by Deborah Levy. I have read it once and need to do so again.
"The Noise of Time" by Julian Barnes
"The Essex Serpent" by Sarah Perry
Tony Halker Being in a landscape and place, able to envision people who lived there, being excited by the beauty they produced and the time they had to do so. We often look back at pre-history and see our ancestors as somehow savage and less than us. Tony Halker A novel set in pre-history that explores power, cultural imperatives, technology and relationships people have with places they are bred and nurtured in; places that give them a sense of self and security.
Tony Halker Do it, sit down and write. It may not be great to start. Writing is a craft that can be developed!
Tony Halker I want to say that I can always get better at it. I add that I am able to express through fiction, thoughts, ideas, people, personalities, and worlds that raw factual writing does get close to. I can try to explore and express emotions and feelings in complex ways. I hope to get better at it!
Tony Halker I walk on my own so that I am in my head. It can be in a craggy and challenging landscape or one that is soft and caressing, both stimulate me, though in different ways.
Watching people, knowing them and their lives, hearing their thoughts is also important. I need to be in the world and open to it
