K. Heidi Fishman My mother, a Holocaust survivor, speaks to school. She usually visits middle school history classes that are studying WWII and the Holocaust. When she came to my daughter's class, I realized that the story would be lost if someone didn't write it down, so I took on the challenge.

I started with her childhood memories from Amsterdam, Westerbork, and Theresienstadt. Then I realized that there was much more to the story as her awareness, as a child, didn't include everything her parents were doing to save her. I started searching museum archives on the internet. When I found a document that was used during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi behind the "Final Solution," that had my grandfather's name on it, I knew I had to search further.

My grandfather had a past I never knew that included saving many German Jewish families in the Netherlands, sabotage of metal the Nazis would use to build their airplanes, hidden money, and falsified papers. The more I dug into the questions, the more the story wrote itself.
