Originally, I had a few scenes and characters that just stewed around in my mind for years. I thought of creating a script (I'm primarily a filmmaker), but the scale was beyond anything I could independently produce, so I decided to develop a book. I wanted to follow a small, dynamic group of characters who were thrust together by deceptively dire circumstances, then see how they bonded through their reactions. Also, growing up near Akron and the Cuyahoga Valley, I've always found the mixture of industry and natural beauty quite fascinating. I also have a soft spot for Art Deco and industrial design.

Be patient and diligent. Don't be afraid to study the craft, research, rewrite things, ask for help, or believe that you can truly be a writer. As a child, or even up through college, I never imagined I would ever write a novel; I'm currently working on my fourth book. I'm as shocked as anyone, but I adore being a writer now.

In the short term, I get to excise the voices in my head. Creating worlds and characters, spending the time to really craft them into something that feels real and honest, that really feels quite magical. Having someone enjoy your work and find it meaningful, that is the probably best.

There are a lot of ways I deal with fidgety fingers, unable to get anything down. Sometimes I just need to do something else and it's simply not a good time to write. Maybe go for a jog, make some bread—whatever—then come back to it. Having a good outline really helps me focus on the moment, dialogue and flow instead of coming up with the story as I go. Also, the world is full of inspiration, so going out to talk and explore tends to help.

The second Archive for the Valley of Progress series is written and awaiting editing. Book 2 is in the process of being written, and I'm happy to say things are going quite well.
