I'm so thrilled to hear you're enjoying THE NORTH WIND!
Favorite author of all time: Tamora Pierce.
It's difficult for me to read consistently these days, but this year I really loved Divine Vows by Rebecca Ross. I'm also reading One Dark Window and enjoying it! Lastly, I read the first four Wilderlore books by Amanda Foody and loved those as a fun middle grade series.

Your concern is definitely valid. The mythology used in BELOW was inspired by the Inuit of Nunavut, Canada. As well, the culture was used as a basis for the indigenous peoples in the book. My research is still ongoing, and some of the sources I've found have been written from a white lens, which is something I've kept in mind when determining what information to use. I worked with someone from Iqaluit to help ensure the mythology came from the same region. When choosing a culture to base my story on, I ask myself what the heart of that culture is. The pieces that make up their identity. In the case of the Inuit, I heavily focused on their naming customs, community/family, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Since I'm not Inuit, my perspective is limited. This story is not a substitute for Inuit or indigenous voices. At the end of the day, I focus on writing flawed, relatable characters and remaining true to the story.
