I am finishing up the final draft of R&B, Vol 2; and working on the outline and first draft of R&B, Vol. 3. My next project will be quite different. Being inspired by history and where I live, I’ve also got a few people in 18th-century France bouncing up and down in my brain, chomping at the bit to be heard. They have made it clear the need to be adventurous and outrageous.

What other writers say: just write! Every day. And learn a lot. Research your subjects well. When you get to the point of editing, that's fantastic. It means you've learned, and that you've been writing.

Writing! Giving fictional people life and love, and things to do, things to think about, and in a way being witness to their story taking shape. Being creative with words is great fun.

I write scenes in nicely lined notebooks with a fountain pen. When I want to write, even if I have nothing in mind but just want to write, I'll either go outside in the sunshine, find a place to sit - it could be under a tree near a brook, or somewhere with good people watching (like a cafe terrace). Then I think up a scene that I need, or just something that might happen in the lives of my characters. It's a way to get to know my characters. I answer a question to myself: "what would they do if... ?" And take it from there. Another way to think about things is to go to bed with my headset on, some good music, and just dream away.

I'm hugely inspired by history; by people; and by music as well.

I love books about small village life and have always wanted to write a story about an English village. I also believe in keeping Blues music alive for future generations. Rhythms and Blues is the result; a story of a village with characters who, while they are regular people, are also a bit unusual. It's about life's ups and downs, about love and friendship, and with a little mystery and also music thrown into the mix.
