If you are an aspiring writer, write. My friend was right, it didn't matter if no one read it, what mattered is that I felt that my story was important enough to share. It's not going to be easy or cheap, but keep going - And if you want to publish, do your research. I did, but it wasn't enough. I know more now than when I started, especially about pre-publication.

Writing is such a creative outlet, and you can write about anything. I like writing because I can help educate and encourage my readers. I can also give them an escape if they need one.

Making Independence Happen, One Paw at a Time is a passion project. It's about my life and the life of my first Canine Companions for Independence service dog, Yazzen. First, Yazzen tells his part of the story from his perspective, then turns the storytelling over to me. I tell my story of what it's like to live with physical differences - while dreaming, laughing, and loving just like everyone else.
If you like Sharon Draper's Out of My Mind; Dean Koontz's Trixie books; or Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain then you might like my story. I'm not as seasoned as these great authors, but my story's similar. Though I didn't read their works until I had already published. I'd been blogging in Yazzen's voice since May of 2013, and I guess you could say that's where the idea started and then it grew from there.

A friend actually encouraged me to start writing. I often thought about writing a book but didn't think people would want to read it- It wasn't until I became unemployed that I decided to step way out of my comfort zone and publish my first book.
