You ask a good question but I'm not sure I have a solid answer for you. I've always had random ideas and thoughts popping into my head and this is just one of the ideas that stuck. The main inspiration came from an idea about a girl who's memories come back to her in her dreams and it all kind of unraveled from there.
I also tend to write stories that I would, in general, like to read so I find the genre of young adult one I tend to drift towards and draw inspiration from.
