David Filmore Read every genre from sci-ny and mythology, horror and detective stories, to news articles and kids books. Work your way through all the classic movies and TV shows, play video games, go to Comic Con and museums, watch cartoons and Japanese game shows on YouTube. Somewhere in your brain that primordial soup will evolve into an idea.
David Filmore Right now I'm nibbling 2 different rhyming picture books, as well as 2 novels. It's really hard. Check in with me further down the road... :)
David Filmore Before you can write you first need to read. Read every book, especially the weird ones. Keep at it, it's going to take years. Sorry, it just does.
David Filmore Never having to leave the house. I would stay here until the sun burns out if I could. And even then I would just get a new house on a planet orbiting a different star, and never leave that.
David Filmore Other authors are going to hate me for saying this, but I don't think writer's block exists. For me, "writer's block" is a catchall term writers use when their book isn't quite working and they don't know why. The reason your book isn't working is because you don't know your story and characters well enough yet. You solve this by asking yourself a million questions about the world you are creating, and the people who inhabit it. Once you know what you want to say, you'll know how to get there. Draw your map, pick the place you need to go, and then take the most direct (and scenic) road there.
