Sarah Johnson By looking under the cooker (I don't recommend you do this: it can be pretty scary what's lurking under there).
Sarah Johnson Thankfully I don't need this either. I always, always have the urge to write. What I often don't have (in common with many other woman writers) is an abundance of time. So it's more about carving off writing time, than feeling in the mood to put down the words.
Sarah Johnson A set of junior fiction titles (there'll be three when I've finished), plus a novel for adults that so far has taken me 11 years to write the first draft! I'm determined the second and subsequent drafts will be quicker.
Sarah Johnson Getting to live in entirely self-constructed worlds (very egotistical when you think about it). Getting to play with words and language. For me, it's always about the language - its beauty and musicality. This focus has its downsides, as clearly plot has a role too!
Sarah Johnson Thankfully I've never had it. I make my living as a freelance writer, and I think that helps. Knowing you can sit down at the keyboard day after day and produce the stuff, whether or not you feel like it. I find deadlines, even if they are self-imposed, wonderfully helpful.
