Roger Distill I've never been desperate to write a book, such that I yearn for inspiration. I don't look for it. I just wait for it to happen. My life is rich in people and places and things happening around me. Inspiration comes from how my mind responds to everything.

The Romans believed that inspiration comes from a Genius, a spiritual being that descended upon a person on a whim and prompted him to specific action, often creative. The word didn't have the same meaning and connotations as it does now.

The Greeks saw it in terms of a dæmon, an aggressive spirit that possessed a person and influenced their behaviour. My inspiration feels much more like that of the Romans' Genius!
Roger Distill I just love words, I love language, and writing allows me to indulge that love. It's purely selfish. I'd continue to write, and I'd continue to love writing, even if no-one ever read the books.
Roger Distill I think it's been fermenting in my mind for years, but I was spurred to write it when I read in The Guardian how so little has changed in education since I joined the ranks. I needed to speak out, and my wife nudged me into it.
Roger Distill I'm working on a second novel; not anything to do with boats or canals this time, but about a probationary teacher. Most of it is based on my own experiences when I first started teaching.
Roger Distill I get involved in some other activity altogether, and try to forget the book I'm trying to write. The brain's an amazing organ. It works on problems in the background, and comes up with possible solutions when you're not expecting them.
Roger Distill I've never had a reading list. I tend to choose books according to my mood at the time, though that often leaves me spoiled for choice!
