Pritika Rao I’ve been writing as long as I can remember. I began when I was barely 6, writing letters to my Mum, graduated to Christmas plays and then elaborately detailed journal entries. In 2010, when living and studying in England, I was inspired to start a blog that I was hugely excited about. A few months later on a cold night, as I sat down and read through the archive, they struck me as incredibly messy and bizarre, and I deleted the whole blog in a fit of embarrassment. It wasn’t until 2012, when I was hunting for a job and looking for purpose and inspiration to fill my days and as an intentional choice to be brave, I started anew. I used a different blogging platform, chose a name, a layout and just began churning out my thoughts. As I kept writing, I grew more confident and moved from anonymity to sharing my writing with my friends and family. Some loved it, some worried and some were just confused (not much has changed, really!) but I learned my greatest lesson in the whole process; that I wasn’t writing for them or for anything. I was writing because I couldn’t contain it. Words were continually swimming around in my head and I loved pinning them down on my blog. But I wanted to be more; a writer with a story to tell. I began working on a fictional novel and referred to it my first book. A few weeks later, I landed a job and the novel was shelved. However, I continued with bursts of poetry on my blog, looking forward to crafting each entry and falling more in love with writing. Earlier this year as I was speaking with a friend about the status of my still-unfinished novel and the work I’d have to do to get it finished, I recognised that the key themes of my writing were loss and unrequited love. To my surprise, I discovered that I already had the story I had been searching for all along. What followed was a fitting of the pieces of the story together, and Eclipse on Joypiter was born.
