Know that every person has a story to tell. Never give up on writing because your story doesn't feel important, dramatic or similar to others'. I see this most with writers of color. When you grow up reading books with characters who are nothing like you, it's easy to believe your stories don't matter. They do!

I like noisy places! I often write my best pieces in cafes. If I'm alone for too long, my mind wanders. I was tired of hearing the message that women needed to "lean in" to succeed. I, like many of my female peers, have often raised my hand and exhibited confidence, only to be penalized for being too aggressive.
I knew we had to change our discourse about how to advance women in the workplace. The current conversation centers too much around what WOMEN need to change, but nothing about the institutional barriers to their advancement.
