When I was watching the horrific coverage of the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, killing over 220,000 people. I bought a book from Amazon.com, then another and another and began learning about this country, its violent history, its religion, and its people, particularly its women. And so Yolande was born. Yolande is the history of Haiti from Papa Doc to President Aristide's second term. Maddy, the eager young reporter on her first trip to Haiti, is the character the reader most identifies with and acts as their eyes and ears. Clare, the tough ex-pat gynaecologist, understands Haiti and can explain its intricacies. She is Yolande's translator in more ways than one.

I'm often asked this and can only say I find myself asking 'what if...?' From this comes the seed of an idea from which a story germinates. In the case of 'When the Dove Cried it was: What if I found a dead body by the river in our village and it turned out to be someone I knew? Which became: What if a wife discovered her murdered husband had a secret life she knew nothing about?

I'm just about to publish my fourth novel, 'The Other Side of the Mountain'. Set in Haiti in 2001 it tells the story of three very different but determined women and their hunt for a missing child.
I'm currently researching my fifth book about a jazz singer and her protege, who both fall in love with two men.
