Oraynab Jwayyed Right now, I'm reading a manuscript for my upcoming book and Pauline Frederick Reporting, by Marilyn Greenwald, about a UN reporter from the '40s and '50s. Once again, I'm deep into books discussing women and the challenges they face. I also plan to read Why Not Me, by Mindy Kaling, and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot. Somewhere in between that time, I will pick up light reads to give myself a break from the complexities of life.
Oraynab Jwayyed I have these secret fans I'd like to embolden. Money is a touchy subject for many women, which is why I receive questions in private. Once I try to address their concerns in public, while respecting their privacy, all I receive is silence. We shouldn't be ashamed of the money problems we have, or that we may not know everything there is to know or we "should know". Just look at how disappointing the financial markets (and the "experts" who run them) have been. It's all a learning process. Besides, it's like what we learned in school: Your issues and questions may be on the minds of many other women. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking the initiative and starting a meaningful conversation.
Oraynab Jwayyed I take my time writing. It's not important that I get material out there within a limited time, I just start a project and take it from there.
Oraynab Jwayyed I get to share my ideas and personal journey. I love reading about others' journeys. I believe they are the best lessons, which is why you'll always find me sitting among the elderly, listening to their stories. I tell you, they're better than any best selling book that's out there.
Oraynab Jwayyed Just do it. Start small - even if you don't have a grand idea. With the proliferation of independent publishing, and thanks to the numerous e-book sources out there, you can publish anything at any time. Leave the big book projects for later.
Oraynab Jwayyed I'm working on my third e-book, which is a compilation of past and present blog posts. And no, it's not an easy task. There's been so much effort on updating many of my earlier posts and collecting all my blog posts from the numerous sites I contributed to.
Oraynab Jwayyed Sharing knowledge is my inspiration. It always has been, even as a kid. But now, I want to help women trying to start over either after a breakup or a financial mess to get to that point in their lives where they're comfortable. The workforce is bleeding from the untapped resources women can offer, but when we're financially dependent on our partners or unable to manage our own money, it's tough to get back into the workforce - especially after raising kids and staying home full-time.
Oraynab Jwayyed My latest book, "Starting Over," was influenced by my own journey. After my divorce, I made it an obligation to get back on my feet financially. So I started teaching classes and offering workshops on money management and then wanted to share what I learned along the way. You can sum it up as my 'best practices' book.
