Taking the real life lessons you've learned and having an outlet to share them in disguise, through the lives of these fictional characters. I also enjoy completely immersing myself in a time period--the music, the food, the clothes, the politics, the attitudes, and then trying to work that into the story in a way that the reader feels *there*.
