I have a boring life compared to the characters in my next novel, The Neptune Cipher!

That is a fun one. I think I'd have to say Colonel Brandon and Marianne Dashwood in Sense snd Sensibility. Perhaps because I am such a fan of the late Alan Rickman!

Thank you SO much for catching that! I will alert the publisher.

Hi!
Well, I read a lot about a lot of different things. Sometimes I get ideas by going to museums or seeing films or documentaries too. I usually have a lot more ideas for possible books that never actually make it to the page!

I loved reading Beatrix Potter to my own kids, and found her life story inspiring. I also loved the film, Miss Potter. Beatrix Potter is an inspiration to young people because she began working on her art when she was a young girl. It's a reminder that the passions we have as children can impact our futures.

I am working on several projects, including some long nonfiction and a novel set in 19th century New York City.
I'm very excited, though, about my next picture book coming out in 2015. It is entitled BEATRIX POTTER AND THE UNFORTUNATE TALE OF THE BORROWED GUINEA PIG and it's based on a real incident in the famed illustrator's life.

Keep reading! I always tell students at author visits that this is the most important thing they can do. Read as widely as possible in all genres.

Writers keep learning. I'm especially lucky to write nonfiction and historical fiction and so whenever I do research I am learning something new. Writing also challenges me to solve new problems -- whether I'm working on a picture book, a novel, or nonfiction.

I don't usually get writer's block, though I do sometimes get stuck! The best way to deal with that is to walk away from the computer to do another task or even take a walk or a shower or go grocery shopping. Somehow, a solution to untangle the writing knot always seems to appear.
