Hmmm, good question! I think focusing on my mother's life as a child and the reasons she went blind for an unspecified period and how she regained her sight would be a fascinating subject for a novel.

I really enjoy giving life to the different characters, especially the ones I could never be like whether it be because they are too malevolent, or simply a different gender or race. It's like a cross between being an actor playing all the parts and a vessel for giving expression to other people's voices. I love the uncertainty. It's exciting!

'Trespassers' came to me one evening in a 'eureka moment'. The characters just appeared in my mind and I quickly got the idea for a book about half-brothers brothers who discovered each other as children and the consequences of that discovery on their adult lives.

Ideas seem to come to me sporadically over time. Characters start speaking to me, telling me who they are in short outbursts, offering me scenarios, which I then start to craft into a basic set of ideas and before I know it, I've got the framework for a story.
