My favorite fictional couple is George and Martha in Who's Afraid of the Virginia Woolf. Their strength and vulnerabilities and raw emotion jump off the page, get inside my head. Even as a child, when I first picked up this book at a neighbor's house, I was struck by their interactions, without understanding what was really going on. And they stay in my head to this day.

I just took a peek at some of Damon Runyan's writing on Amazon, and he does indeed write in a first-person present-tense voice in his writing. I might point out one difference, however. His writing, at least the small sample I have read, is in the moment, whereas, my writing is much more entangled with memory. Thanks for the reference! I don't see too much of this style, and I like it very much.

Hi Stephen,
Like my first two novels, I stay with a first person present tense narrative style, this time with a minor adjustment, that brings the voice I find works best for my stories. If I re-write in "normal" past tense, I personally find the voice weakens. If you look at the reviews of my books on Amazon, some readers feel the voice adds a detachment that matches the narrator's condition, while others find it more personal and brings the reader closer to the narrator. I like that the style works for both cases. I hope this answers your question.

The act of writing inspires me. Facing the page.

It's just you and the page.
