I'm focusing on thrillers this summer since that is what I'm writing. I've already read Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica and The Serial Killer's Wife by Alice Hunter. I'm currently reading In the Woods by Tana French.

Thank you AntKathy. I love San Diego. It is one of my favorite cities. Whistling Women is my first novel, so there is nothing else out there at the moment. I am working on a new one and 3/4 of the way done with it. I am hoping to have a first draft done by the end of summer. It is not a sequel, but it is also historical and based in Southern California.

My ideas are inspired by things I come across in old newspapers or while investigating the history of different areas.
I'm inspired daily by making time to write--even if I don't feel like it and even if it is only an hour or two a day. If I feel really stuck, I may go away for a weekend of writing. It is difficult for me to write for that many hours, but it does help me re-focus.

While writing my last novel, I came across a newspaper article from 1935 about a female pilot setting a world record by flying upside down from Mexico to San Diego. The story grew from there.

I try to write every day whether I feel inspired or not. I have a quote from Pablo Picasso taped to my bathroom mirror that says: "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." When I follow that, it does seem to work. If I sit down at the computer and can't seem to get going, I'll open a novel from one of my favorite authors and just start typing in a different document. I call it my warm-up. Then, I close all that down and go back to my own work.

Never give up and keep learning. The chances are that you will get many rejections. Almost all the writers I know do, including myself. Attend workshops, take classes, or learn from your favorite authors by reading and analyzing what they do in their novels.
