Certainly not Regency England. I love the fantasy elements of the Regencies where everyone is rich or gets there in the end and none of the sanitation problems are in evidence.

I just wrote a review/blog post about my recent deep dive back into an old favorite...the sweet regency novella.

I have a series (Blue Lake) set in a small beach town. When one of my favorite minor characters from that series (Lily) left town, I decided to follow her. She moved to Detroit and became a PI.

What inspired the crime novel was a couple of things. First Elmore Leonard died. He wrote great Detroit crime novels. I'm from Detroit. I thought "I should write a crime novel as a homage to EL." Also, I love reading crime novels and wondered if I could write one.

I'm working on a crime novel set in Detroit. It's a completely different kind of book for me to write, although I've been reading mysteries since Nancy Drew and I'm getting worried that Sue Grafton is getting to the end of the alphabet.

I give myself permission to take a writing break and I write morning pages which are like diary entries and never meant to be shared. In fact I fill notebooks and throw them away when I finish one. Nobody needs to see that mess inside my head spilled onto the page. But somehow doing morning pages eventually frees up whatever was bottled inside. I also take Artist Dates (yes I am channeling Julia Cameron). This winter I gave myself permission to not work on a challenging book for three months. I did morning pages and artist dates and after six weeks I eagerly went back to my manuscript with fresh plot ideas.
