What fortune it is to stumble upon a hospital's waiting list for organ transplants. My knife sharpened and zip-ties in the pocket, I'm off to round up some donors.

If I could, I'd go 'down' to Pellucidar, the hollow Earth. I would...sell solar panels...and evade the sabertooth lions. Not necessarily in that order.

A mystery in my own life?
I have a very strong electro-magnetic field that emanates from my body.
Whenever I walk past a television, a radio, or other device that is supposed to be receiving some other signal, it picks up me instead.
Usually just static. To which my wife will attest!

Herbert could peel the onion, to get through the layers of the character's psyche. He took us from the obvious external façade of what the character wanted everyone to see, into the subtle feelings and hopes, then into the fears and longing, and finally deep into their soul. Some, like Jessica or Liet Kynes, were fairly easy to transition thru. Others, like Chani, or Gurney Halleck (and later his gholla), were a more profound journey. Before I start Page One of a novel, I'm laying out the list of characters and how they will interact. It takes at least a week to just get a handful where I think their head will be at by the middle of the book. It is hard work, and Herbert could do it all day with excellence.

If I get stuck in the development of a scene or a character, I'll go for a drive or a ride on the motorcycle. Out there somewhere will be an inspiring person, place or thing. I take lots of notes or send myself an email with the details I need to have when I return.
