Robin Falvey Keep going until you get to the end - that way you've got something to work on. And by then you'll have poured so much time into your project, you wouldn't dream of not finessing your manuscript to the absolute best of your ability!
Robin Falvey For a while, I worked as a deck hand on an an old square rigger sailing across the South Pacific (I know, how awful). There was no TV, to distract us, so we used to make our own entertainment. Skits, fancy dress parties, and stories. I would write funny short stories and read them out. People liked them, and that encouraged me to write more - before long, I'd caught the bug and now, seven years on, as well as completing 'Fulmar', I work as a journalist and copywriter.
Robin Falvey I knew I wanted to write a Young Adult novel, I just needed the character and setting. I'd been surfing at my local break in North Cornwall and was sitting in my van eating chips when I noticed some kids from the surf lifesaving club messing around in the river that empties out onto the beach.

I was a surf lifesaver for about 15 years and of course everyone says, 'write what you know'. So I grabbed an envelope and jotted down an idea about a kid who is from a messed up family, with dodgy mates and basically on the wrong track. He doesn't surf, but he's got a connection with the sea, but what, I thought, would happen to this kid if he was here now, and I gave him a surfboard?
