Lori L. MacLaughlin I'd have to say my favorite fictional couple would be Aragorn and Arwen from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I particularly love how they were portrayed in the Peter Jackson movies. Aragorn is heroic in every sense of the word and Arwen is willing to give up her immortality to be with him. Theirs is a true and noble love strong enough to overcome all obstacles — love, the way it should be.
Lori L. MacLaughlin I've always been drawn to strong female characters who are more than capable of looking out for themselves and who are accepted as they are. I also prefer fantasy worlds where women and men are treated as equals, with no thoughts of discrimination. No one thinks it strange if a woman leads a kingdom or handles a sword well.
I built my story around these ideas and fitted them into the world I'd already created in maps and sketches. My main character is my alter ego, so I dreamed up adventures for her that I would like to have.
Lori L. MacLaughlin My characters inspire me. Attending writers' meetings always fires me up, too.
Lori L. MacLaughlin The best thing is that you get to create your own worlds and characters the way you like them, and then you're just along for the ride. It's so much fun watching the characters' adventures play out in my head. Sometimes I can't write the words down fast enough.
Lori L. MacLaughlin I'm doing final edits on Book 2: Trouble By Any Other Name. I'm also working on another story unrelated to my first novel, a fantasy adventure called The Road Once Taken. I'm about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through the first draft.
Lori L. MacLaughlin Write the type of story you'd like to read, and never give up! Start building your social media/marketing platform long before you're ready to publish. Revise your work until it's as good as you can make it, then hire an editor and revise some more. Invest in a good cover designer. I think those are the most important things.
Lori L. MacLaughlin I've never had real writer's block, but sometimes when the words aren't flowing well, I walk away from the computer and busy myself with something else. Usually after a few hours or within a day or two at most, I'm back on track. I've also found that long walks are good for figuring out plot tangles and other issues with the story.
