I'd always loved reading and admired writers. I grew up reading several books a week. To me, writers were people who lived a world apart doing something magical--creating ideas and emotions. I trained as a musician and loved the immediacy of performance, but the notion of creating worlds and the characters that inhabit them always struck me as an amazing gift. A gift I wanted for myself.

People had been asking for a sequel to The HomePort Journals from the time it was published. I wanted to pick up the story of HomePort's chosen family at a point where they were still adjusting to their changing circumstances. For a long time, I was stymied as to what sort of challenge they might face. When the pandemic came along, I didn't want to write about that, but felt comfortable writing about the changes that it brought on in my small hometown. It turns out we're all facing the challenges of gentrification, housing shortages, and lack of fulltime employment, so I had all I needed to write The Distance Between Us.
