I get inspired to write when I think I have some insights to share that will help people learn or otherwise achieve their potential. This happens to me frequently in my engineering teaching work, where I would write a tutorial to demystify some topic that students find difficult. When a student says, "That was really helpful!", I have my reward.

For me, actually writing "The Triad" was the easy part. This book was intended from the start to be a humanitarian project to generate funds for charity and also to open new lines of thinking and conversation about how to make the American political system function better and achieve widely shared prosperity. So I'm currently working on getting the word out about the book so that I can achieve these goals.

For non-fiction, find a topic that you are passionate about. Have conversations with people about it, so that you get a diversity of viewpoints. Then think about how you might use those differing viewpoints to gain "depth perception" about the topic. When you've got a message, sometimes it's best to just sit down and start writing.
