Oh, that is a good one! I loved "The Abyss", but that wasn't what inspired "Payload."
Years ago, I saw the complete version of "Das Boot", a German TV-series about an U-boat during WWII. The feature-length film by the same name is rather well known, but the full miniseries is 6 hours of (at times literally) crushing tension and heart-wrenching drama.
That story left a very strong impression. So when I was looking for a story angle on the Seven of Clubs tarot card, I decided to make the 'clubs' torpedoes and try to capture the terrifying, claustrophobic atmosphere of a submarine under siege.

I always have multiple projects running at a time. I'm terrible at focussing on the same project for more than a few days, because stories need what I call 'gestation time': periods in between writing where ideas can mature so the story comes together in my mind. I need to have that sorted before I can write anything down.
At the moment I'm working on:
"Dark Eyes" - Novel
In 19th century Paris, people are dying clean but very unnatural deaths. Mercedes Fabron, a psychic woman who tries to lead a normal life despite her tortured past, finds herself caught in the middle she refuses to give up the safety of her daughter's soul. Meanwhile the ghosts she sees are aware of the growing danger as well, and some of them take action.
"Res Arcana: Pentacles" - flash fiction
3rd of 5 flash fiction ebooks based on the tarot deck. (When they are all done, I will also publish them as a printed book, along with some stories not included in the ebooks.
"The Kalbrandt Institute: Hauntings" - short stories
Several cases as reported by agents of the Kalbrandt Institute, the elusive, century-old organisation specialised in paranormal research. Hopefully the first of several collections on different subjects, 'Hauntings' contains stories of the organisation's Ghost Division.
And then there are several separate short stories and a novelle that are as yet too premature to say anything about.
So there is plenty to come!
