Other writers. I've met so many amazing people, and getting to know other people in real life while also through their work is a way to tap into a rich level of humanity. I'm all for it.

I generally don't have writer's block. Ideas are plentiful! But sometimes I have a crisis of faith, where I'm not sure I'm on the right track with a piece of writing, and that can create a reluctance to put words on the page. Then I just try to recognize it for what it is (self doubt) feel it, and move ahead anyway, knowing I can revise, revise, revise, until I create work I feel good about. It's hard to see one's own work-in-progress, rich in shortcomings, but it's part of the craft.

Monica: Shout out from one of your former Creative Writing students (when you took a last-minute assignment to teach a CW class at PCC Sylvania). As someone who doesn't believe that writer's block really exists- that it's more of an excuse for idleness, than anything else- I totally agree with your "crisis-of faith" comments. On another subject, I wanted you to know that I've included you in the "acknowledgements" portion of a memoir I just self-published on Amazon. It's called "The Book of Dan: Serving Across the 34th Parallel." I carry with me lessons I learned from your class, and wish you well. BTW, Clown Girl is a good book and a great example of how to tell a compelling, involving story.

Yes! We meet in a writing workshop every Monday night, along with Chelsea Cain, Lidia Yuknavitch, Suzy Vitello and others. It's an amazing group! We've been meeting since before anyone had work out, so we've grown as writers together. I love my workshop, my friends. This group has been written about in a few places, including a piece by Chelsea Cain in the NYT's, and one in the Oregonian when Cheryl Strayed was still joining us (and we hope she may come back, at some point the in future). Thanks for asking!
