My book, Neither King Nor Country, was truly an evolution of a story if there ever was one. It began with my own genealogy research more than 10 years ago and as I learned more about my family, I needed to learn more about the history of their times. As I read more, I also taught more in my US History classes. I discovered that thousands of people had experiences similar to my family's. Then, finally, I discovered that one of our greatest Founding Fathers had a similar story (Benjamin Franklin) and in fact even more incredible than mine and I knew this was a story I had to write.

That is an easy one for me. I love it when my characters do something I did not expect. I believe writing is character driven and I never spend too much time on plot. It is an awesome feeling when your characters do something you did not anticipate. At that moment, you know you did a good job!

Fortunately that has not really hit me very often. In order to do really good writing, I believe it is imperative to do good research. You can never research too much so if I am ever in a rut, I usually read more about whatever subject, person or place I am writing about and then something comes to me.
