My great grandmother grew up in an orphanage, but she had an anonymous benefactor who made sure she had significant amounts of money up until she left. A DNA analysis kit from one of those ancestry sites revealed a significant chance that our ancestry is not what we always thought it was - granny was either lying, or lied to, about her own ethnic background.

I've got a family saga set in the same world as Ours Is the Storm that could be done within the year. It's all about heroism and failure and epic fights between godlike sorcerers amidst day-to-day trials and heartache. I've realized my love for wild places and wilderness and empty, sweeping landscapes and so this one will have more of a frontier feel to it.
Another thing I'm slowly putting together is a series of crime novels, still set in the same fantasy world, which will be right down in gutters and all whiskey and bare, cut-up knuckles and dirt, dealing with street crime and conspiracies in an urban morass.

I've always loved fantasy and magic and a kick-ass fight scene.Other than that, at the time I started, I was working as an assistant English teacher in a Japanese high school. Between classes, train trips, getting stuck at bus stations, I had a lot of down time, and a lot of things that made it into the book were on my mind. Living in a foreign place, in a country where I could barely understand anyone, sometimes feeling (or literally getting) lost, and the grandeur of the journey were all things that appeared in the book. A lot of Ours Is the Storm is about Revik and Ahi'rea figuring out what their lives are, what they mean.
