Dennis E. Taylor That's one of those things that you do as an act of defiance or bravado. Once the source of pressure for that attitude disappears, so does the behaviour. The Medeiri are (apparently) gone from the galaxy now. Same way air force pilots stopped painting their planes after WWII.
Dennis E. Taylor It wasn't directly part of the plot since they didn't produce an interstellar probe. However, given the 'consolidation' that was going on globally, it would most likely have become part of a larger nation or league, if only for mutual protection.

Dennis E. Taylor 1. They didn't have the tech figured out for non-humans yet (I think this was mentioned in Heaven's River).
2. Yes. In fact it's an idea for a future book.
Dennis E. Taylor It's loosely based on a combination of A World Out of Time by Larry Niven and The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey. But I had to make Bob electronic in order to allow replication.
Dennis E. Taylor Lord Miller Productions has the movie rights.
Dennis E. Taylor It's day to day now. In principle, the ebook and paperback go up the same day. In practice, when Amazon took over Createspace, they introduced a lot of additional complexity. The person in charge of putting up the paperback is working through it one glitch at a time.

Dennis E. Taylor Bob isn't an A.I., he's a replicant. It may sound like pedantry, but an A.I. would be built from the ground up to specs. A replicant (in the Bobiverse) is a copied human mind, so has all the limitations of the original, but is a speed superintelligence, which just means he can screw up faster.
Dennis E. Taylor The two people who I think my writing the most resembles are Andy Weir and John Scalzi. Not surprisingly, I'd recommend their books. Golden age or less current authors include Larry Niven, Poul Anderson, Steven Gould, Jack McDevitt, David Brin. Others, Gene Doucette, Robert Sawyer. And of course Alanson's ExForce series.
Dennis E. Taylor I think the exploration part.
Dennis E. Taylor 1. I'll talk to my agent about it. This sounds a lot like an agent-y question.

2. Martian. No contest.

3. I'd be heading for the far reaches. I'm not a joiner.

4. No, that was just a bonus. I wanted the Others to be as nebulous as possible. I didn't even have them provide a name for themselves.
Dennis E. Taylor Done.
