A couple of years ago I found out that the man I thought was my father really wasn't, and instead, my biological father--whom I never knew--had died just a week before my birth. Now I know what happened (a natural death, but very young). But until I had that info, the mystery of that tragic week in late December 1970 felt like fiction.

Thanks for asking, Judy! I'm working on a thriller set in Guatemala, involving a mother trying to learn the truth about her daughter's death. It's more of a conventional thriller in the sense of no hybrid structure, no long-ago past storyline. I've had a ball writing it, and it's partly based on a trip I made to Guatemala, so it's been fun bringing the setting and culture alive--especially during this COVID era, when we can't travel! Thanks for asking, and I apologize I never saw this question when it was first posted two months ago. (!)

I love how writing allows me to participate more actively in the world: observing, learning, asking questions, having experiences. I love to travel and research my novels' settings: Spain (The Spanish Bow); Italy (The Detour); Taiwan and Japan (Plum Rains), even Baltimore (Behave).

A new novel about a historian who is digging into the secrets of 19th century sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who as a child was kept captive by a couple she called "The Wolves." Like Annie, my historian Ruth has some grudges. Due to a car accident, she also has strange visions. Past, present and near future come together in this book that asks questions about memory, healing and revenge.

Finish drafts. It's tempting to keep starting over when you're trying to write apprentice novels, but getting to the end is often what teaches us what the story is really meant to be about, as well as the best way to structure it. Accept imperfection. Just keep going!
